At the time of writing, Maryland Governor Wes Moore is wrapping up a week-long trip to Asia, focusing on strengthening the ties that Maryland has to Japan, which is one of state’s closest partners in economic trade1. And this trade mission is vital now more than ever. President Trump’s trade war has placed 10-25% tariffs on goods imported from Japan2. Not only that, but Maryland is also facing the potential effects of federal funding cuts and a budget deficit of over $3 billion3. But I will not dwell on political instability and economic repercussions. Instead, this blog will focus on how REPROCELL is emerging as a key player in the increasingly important relationship between Maryland and Kanagawa Prefecture in the biotech and life science sector.
During his trade mission Governor Moore met with Governor Kuroiwa of Kanagawa Prefecture and the two signed a renewed memorandum of understanding between the two regions. This memorandum aims to re-affirm each region’s commitment to foster economic growth and continuing trade in technology and culture4. The Sister State relationship is an important driver in introducing Japanese companies to the Maryland market and vice versa. The Governor’s office estimates that trade between Maryland and its Asian partners totals close to $8 billion yearly5. REPROCELL, without a doubt, plays a significant role in this growing trade.
One notable event during Moore’s trip was the Maryland Business Seminar, where he interacted with Japanese businesses that are based in Kanagawa, but also have a presence in Maryland. As you may already know, REPROCELL has ties to both regions and Daisuke Usui, Chief Operating Officer for REPROCELL Inc, had the honor of representing the company during this seminar (pictured4)
Daisuke spoke about REPROCELL’s iPSC capabilities and their potential in advancing cell therapy development, emphasizing how organizations in the biopharma industry are evaluating or utilizing our clinical iPSC technology. He highlighted how REPROCELL’s presence in both Kanagawa and Maryland enables the company to have global reach, and explained how Maryland’s strong talent pool, support from the Maryland Stem Cell Research Fund, and proximity to renowned scientific institutions make it the perfect location for REPROCELL’s U.S. headquarters. According to Daisuke, he felt that it was “extremely encouraging” when Governor Moore expressed how appreciative he was for everything that REPROCELL does in Maryland (pictured) to lead and drive the global cell therapy industry using the REPROCELL’s stem cell capability.
Over the past several months, REPROCELL has transitioned beyond the biotech bubble to become a standout example that political leaders now highlight as a success of the Maryland-Kanagawa Sister State partnership. Maryland is quickly becoming a leader in several industries including quantum technology, the life sciences, and aerospace engineering5. And though challenging economic times may loom ahead, REPROCELL remains committed to its position as a global leader in clinical iPSC technology, demonstrating that strong partnerships are essential to lasting success.
